Since The Race for the Yankee Zephyr filming in 1981 while still at high school in Queenstown, Janey Hughes has harboured an intrigue with filmmakers and their shared love of our beautiful environment.
Raising 3 children in Queenstown, surrounded by all it’s beauty and the endless run of films in the area, has extended Janey’s appreciation for the dramatic aspect of Queenstown. Her children have been actively involved in the performing arts for the last 15 years, starting in drama classes as young as 3 where they relished time on stage to entertain audiences, and win medals in speech competitions.
This love of performing in 2 of her children has continued through into teaching drama classes, managing stage productions, designing entire lighting sequences, and now into Tertiary study of Communication and Theatre.
Janey’s commitment to the Performing Arts was cemented in 2019 when she opened a new Drama School (Kate Moetaua Collective) in response to the closing of the local drama school and to honour her long time friend who had given her adult life to growing confidence and skills in her young performers. The KMC is now presenting regular performances in our community, and building a following of adult performers through their annual Summer School for Actors. Workshops and classes continue year round, with local teachers, tutors and administrators from around NZ, all working together with the aim of growing our amazing Central Otago talent for the local theatre and film industry.
With her passion for youth and community, the combination of her Exposure Talent & Model Agency and Drama School gave Janey a way to continue to help our performing arts community to extend their opportunity to entertain and perform from stage to screen. Her goals are to support our talent, actors and models into being involved and engaged in every production, big or small, filmed in Queenstown and Central Otago
- To empower young drama students to be engaged in the growing number of audition and self tape opportunities.
- To enable skill development and successful selection for local talent seeking unique film experiences.
